TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — In spite of being located in the heart of the Great Lakes, Michigan’s water infrastructure is aging and persistently underfunded, and too many Michiganders live without clean, safe drinking water. On September 21, Flow Water Advocates will present a special live webinar on new legislation to address these challenges: the Michigan Water Trust Fund Act (SB 950 & 951), featuring the bills’ sponsor, state Senator Sam Singh (D-28).
Modeled after Michigan’s successful 50-year-old Natural Resources Trust Fund, the MWTFA would raise approximately $300 million annually by collecting a 25-cent-per-gallon royalty paid by bottled water companies that extract and sell Michigan’s publicly-held water resources. The permanent, dedicated fund would create lasting investments in safe drinking water, infrastructure, and groundwater protection.
Sen. Singh will discuss the legislation, how the MWTFA works, and his vision for water safety, security, and affordability across Michigan. The webinar panel will also include: Jim Nash, Oakland County Water Commissioner; Frank Ettawageshik, United Tribes of Michigan; and Lance Binoniemi, Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association (MITA). The panel will also respond to audience questions.
