As Michiganders, we’re proud to call the Great Lakes our home, and that everyone can get out and enjoy our beautiful lakes and rivers.

But even here, surrounded by the Great Lakes, too many of our neighbors don’t have clean, safe, affordable water. And widespread flooding this past April demonstrated the perilous condition of our dams, bridges, and drainage systems.

Introduced in the Michigan state senate in May 2026 by Sen. Sam Singh (D-28), the Michigan Water Trust Fund Act would help address our water infrastructure, safety, and affordability challenges by establishing a dedicated, permanent trust fund. Modeled on the successful Natural Resources Trust Fund, the MWTFA would collect a $0.25 per gallon royalty — paid by water bottling companies — for the extraction and bottling of our public water resources.
