After 15 years of transforming grassroots determination into landmark legal and policy victories for our region’s rivers, lakes, and streams, Flow Water Advocates is boldly stepping into its next era of water protection.
Elizabeth Kirkwood, Flow’s founding executive director, who has led the organization from a determined startup into one of the Great Lakes region’s most formidable water policy and advocacy organizations, is moving into a new role as Flow’s strategic partnerships officer. Her portfolio expands Flow’s influence and credibility in the spaces where it matters most – the courts, government agencies, communities, the media, and public opinion.
“At this time in history, strong relationships and coalitions are more critical than ever as we work to build power, influence, and durable positive change,” said Kirkwood. “I am excited to shift my focus outward and deepen our collaborations, build new coalitions, and advance policies to defend and protect all the waters of the Great Lakes Basin.”
As Liz transitions to her new role, Flow is simultaneously conducting a nationwide search for the organization’s second executive director. The new director, expected to be named in the next several months, will lead a respected and established organization with a powerful mission, committed staff, strong donor and partner relationships, and a vital role in Great Lakes water protection. The new director will carry Flow’s history forward — sharpening priorities, strengthening internal systems, and expanding the organization’s policy, legal, and public reach throughout the Great Lakes region.
The changes in Flow’s senior leadership reflect a purposeful, strategic move to build on the legal, policy, and advocacy breakthroughs Flow has made since 2011. They also come at a moment of compelling opportunities to make real progress in protecting public trust rights to water, while facing increasingly consequential and complex challenges.
