Established in 1978, the Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP) provides technical assistance and strategic grant funding to assist in coastal communities’ ability to understand risks, and options to mitigate coastal hazards; create healthy habitats that provide for human use and enjoyment; support coastal eco-tourism opportunities while ensuring for safe public access; and support resilient and sustainable coastal economies. The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Water Resources Division (WRD), the Coastal Management Program Unit (CMPU) administers the Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP).
Flow Water Advocates submitted comments on the MCMP’s draft 2026-2030 Enhancement Assessment and Strategies, which you can download here. Our recommendations include:
- Greater emphasis placed on reviewing the impacts of shore armoring permits.
- Revising the priority level of public access from “medium” to “high.”
- A partnership between EGLE and the Natural Resources Trust Fund to identify opportunities for state or local coastal zone acquisition.
